Learning All About Biopsy

When someone hears from their doctor that they will need a biopsy, this can often cause anxiety. Normally your doctor will not schedule a biopsy without due cause. A biopsy is usually performed by a surgeon. This medical test involves taking samples of cells or tissue for closer examination. If some type of disease is detected by a pathologist, then your doctor can recommend the next step in your treatment.

There are a number of different types of biopsy, all performed for various reasons, but mostly to detect cancerous cells. The biopsy allows your doctor to examine the tissue for a better diagnosis. If you have been having problems in some area or have detected a lump, for instance in your breast, then a biopsy can tell whether the lump is malignant.

Biopsy

A biopsy can be done on the bladder, kidneys, vulva, vagina, cervix, liver, breast, or just about any area of the body. Bone marrow biopsies can also be performed to show whether your bone marrow is healthy and producing healthy blood cells. All forms of biopsy including skin biopsy are used to detect cancer. Depending on the type and area where the biopsy will be performed, a patient may experience more or less discomfort during the process. You may have bleeding, pain or discomfort for several days after a biopsy.

Your doctor will sit down with you and explain the entire procedure from start to finish so that you will know what to expect. Patients often experience anxiety when faced with a biopsy, but be sure to speak with your doctor if you are experiencing more than the normal amount of nervousness so that she can address this issue.
