What is menopause?

Menopause is the absence of the menstrual cycle for one full year. It usually occurs to women around age 50-51. There are blood tests available to help make the diagnosis menopausal symptoms vary from women to women. Some women have none, while others are miserable. Menopausal symptoms include hot flashes, mood swings, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, memory changes, pain with intercourse, decrease interest in sex, difficulty sleeping and weight gain.

Things you Can Do to Alleviate the Symptoms

There are so many great things a woman can do to ease the symptoms and fly through this time with few problems. Exercise is one thing that most doctors recommend. Get out and take a walk as often as possible. Join a gym. Exercise is not only good for your physical health, it’s also a great cure for the blues.

Those days when you feel weary and tired can quickly be turned around by a brisk walk. Stop and talk to neighbors, notice the beautiful flowers in bloom. The weather in south Florida is usually beautiful and the landscape is dotted with colorful and fragrant plants and flowers, so there’s no reason to stay indoors and hibernate during menopause. This is often our natural tendency though.

Should you Take Herbal & Vitamin Supplements?

During menopause you can lose bone mass and although exercise will certainly help with this, your doctor may prescribe a herbal or vitamin supplement or calcium. Be sure to discuss your desire and thoughts about taking these with either Dr. Bayer or Dr. Knowlton. It’s important to take the right supplements that will not interfere with other medications or health conditions you may have.

Osteoporosis is a concern for most women during menopause. This disease is marked by your bones becoming weak and fragile. Osteoporosis actually means “porous bones” and once your bones become weakened and porous, they are more likely to break. Eating foods rich in calcium and an overall healthy diet of fruits and vegetables is highly recommended. A Mediterranean diet that includes extra virgin olive oil is good for both heart and bones.

During the menopause transition, many women experience heavy and irregular bleeding that is related to the hormonal changes. Years ago, this heavy bleeding was treated with the removal of the uterus- also known as hysterectomy. Today we have an amazing procedure, a novasure ablation, which can be done in the office or in an outpatient setting. During an ablation, the lining of the uterus, the part that sheds every month, is destroyed. For a large number of women, the ablation prevents them from bleeding again.
